Balthasar Neumann designed the incredibly ostentatious ceremonial staircase at Schloss Bruhl, Cologne, in 1740. Richly decorated and vividly coloured, this fine example of the German rococo period takes on a whole different aspect when we view this isolated detail rendered in dramatic black and white.
