Weeping Ash

...is the name of our house. It's also the name of this web site, started in 2001 and recently transferred to this new format.

My name is Roy Hammans and I'm a photographer(primarily) and designer of web sites and print publications in the UK.

My photography is a mix of digital and traditional silver-based (sometimes referred to as 'analogue'). I maintain a fully-equipped and dedicated wet darkroom alongside my digital lightroom, using film formats from 35mm to 5x4. From traditional negatives, I make fine art prints to archival standards using fibre-based paper; digital work is likewise printed to the same standard using an Epson 3800 Stylus Pro printer and pigment inks. Any of my photographs are available for purchase; please contact me to enquire.

All the content from the old Weeping Ash site (still viewable here, but no longer updated) has been included here and expanded. This new format allows for easier updates and content addition, plus it lets you leave comments and (hopefully) navigate the material more effectively.

The content is all available from the menu on the left or top and is as follows:

Photographs: contains various galleries of my own work, added to and updated fairly regularly.

Creative Camera: contains a brief history of this formative magazine, published in the UK from 1964 until 2001, as well as a lot of material from various sources about the people involved and the content.

Photographers: contains sections on Edwin Smith, Raymond Moore, Tony Ray-Jones, and others, all of whom I have a particular interest in and about whom there is little other material published on the web.

The Cambridge Darkroom: a brief history of the institution I helped establish in 1978, which finally fell victim to Arts Council cuts and closed down in 2004.

Ash Tray - the blog: contains short articles and references that I add occasionally, relating to photography, photographers and, well, just about anything I feel like adding.

Other Site Links: contains links to some of the web sites that I visit regulary and which I personally feel make a great contribution to the store of information on photography and design on the web.

Book Shop: is a link to my Amazon store, where I list books I own - or would love to own - and which reflect my interests. Buying anything on Amazon via this link gives me a few pennies to help pay for this site!

Contact Me: does what it says, and lets you send me a message about anything or everything on this site. Please use it to let me know what you think or to point me in the direction of anything you feel should be included or amended.

Sitemap: A quick way to see the structure of this warren.

Lastly, you will find links to my occasional photoblog, Ash Clippings, and to my Flickr pages. Lots of the photographs on these may also be here in Photographs, but quite a few aren't.

Please feel free to explore and comment if the mood takes you. Thanks for visiting!
