I'm attracted to Mersea Island for many reasons, but perhaps most notably because there is a real sense of the 'greater island' that is Great Britain and how we, as a country, have always been inextricably tied to the sea. It's as if the whole of our nautical heritage is summarised in the landscape, the boats, the wrecks, the seafaring industries, and the people who have ventured out to sea from here since our history began.
